Get Your Bearings

One of the biggest questions to ask yourself when looking at service-oriented options is why. Why are you interested in this particular form of service? What’s in it for you? Just because you’re in service to others doesn’t mean your intentions need to be altogether selfless. Plenty of people join military service because of the job opportunities and benefits. Travel, life experience, and good karma are just a few other good reasons to volunteer for a nonprofit organization or at a school, either here or abroad. And there are plenty of other reasons. Volunteering can be a great litmus test for different fields you’re interested in, without having to take a full-time job. You can feel free to try various vocations. Commit to a regular short stint of service somewhere, just a few hours a week, and see if it’s a good fit. If it isn’t, be honest about it, move on, and try something else. Schools, nonprofits, and other organizations are always looking for volunteers. There’s never a shortage of opportunities. A quick search on volunteermatch.org or idealist.org will yield hundreds of options. Go ahead and take a look!
